How many cars are there in the world?

The car industry is really big. If you want to calculate the total number of motor vehicles on the planet it will be an inexact science, but the number is growing rapidly.

The automotive trade journal Ward's Auto had estimated that the total crossed 1 billion vehicles sometime during 2010. Less than four years later there were more than 1.2 billion cars on the road.

By 2035, a record 2 billion cars will be beaten. According to a report from Macquarie Bank, 88.1 million cars and light commercial vehicles were sold worldwide in 2016, up 4.8% from a year earlier.

Scientists suggest that it will be necessary to cut average carbon emissions 80 percent if we wish to stabilize the impact of climate change.
